i was just given an ATI Super Damper for the 350, reading here in these warning pamphlets and installation instructions that i need to hone the crank to ten thousandths of an inch?!?

first off all, wouldnt honing the crank require that I dysasemble the entire engine?!?

I have no clue what crank Im running, just that it is definately aftermarket

anyone have any advice? used one of these things before ?

The ATI dampers are designed to be honed so that they can fit some of the aftermarket cranks that were made a bit on the small side. The only way to properly install it is to have someone measure the size of your crankshaft snout, and then hone the ID of the damper to the proper interference fit. I don't think it is ten thousanths by the way, more like .0015" ( One and a half thouthanth ) I will have to look in my stuff at the shop to be sure.
By the way, the only way to properly hone the damper is on a machine like a Sunnen connecting rod hone. Do NOT try to do it with a brake hone etc, you will probably ruin the damper.
Your machine shop should be able to do this for you.

I beleive the interfearance fit is .0009 to .0012 on a SBC and they do have to be honed in a rod hone like Bill said a brake hone won't work due to the key way groove.
