hey Guys,

Just found this board. Looks like some excellent information.

I have a 95 Impala SS with the 4L60E(700R4) tranny. After a few rebuilds, it looks to me like it's just not holding up. I'm thinking of going to a TH400. Has anyone here doen a similar swap?

Thanks.

Haven't done the swap, but I think that the 400 is a little shorter than your 700. A 400 can handle some serious power though if it is built well.

The computer in your impala most likely wont like the fact that it cant control the trans anymore. If you live in a state where they do emissions testing, you may get more than you are bargaining for.

No emissions testing in Daytona Beach area. The computer will be fooled by a bunch of resistors. That's the easy part

I decided to go ahead and do this mod. I have a N2O 383 in the works, and I very much doubt the 4L60E will be able to hold up. It will cost me over 1500 to rebuild the 4L60E plus the 3500 lockup converter is almost 1000 bucks. The tranny guy doesn't want me to go over 550hp with it.

The TH400 and 3500 stall converter will run me a total of 1200, including the driveshaft work. It's guaranteed to hold up to 800hp. In addition, I get a tranny rebuild for $275 within 3 years.

Down the road, when my finances recuperate, I'll probably get the Gear Vendors overdrive, and I'll have a 6 speed

You are certainly right that 4L60 will disintegrate in short order with that kind of power. About the only thing that will hold that without spending a zillion buck would be a TH400.

As you were

Do a search on WE4 for info on the 200-4R. Also contact Art Carr.

The little 200 will handle some serious power if built right(like 800hp!!), plus there is a post called "we will make this 700 live if it kills us" or something like that here too that is real long winded and even has some posts by WE4 as he got caught up in the banter.

I considered the 200 for my 496 but like ta "row the gears" too much.. If/when I gernade my M-20, I will probably get one. pdq67 pdq67

Hey Tom,

I looked into the 4L80, and it's 2200+950 for converter. This will cost the same as a TH400+converter+GearVendors overdirve.

The rebuild cost on a 4L80E is astronomical compared to the TH400. Callaway uses the TH400 & Gear Vendors on their twin turbo Corvettes, so I guess they also prefer that set-up to the 4L80E.

pdq67, I have a buddy with a Buick GN, and after trashing his 200R4 several times, he finally went to a TH400. He also runs in the 9s My goal next year is to get some mid 10s, and with a 4400 lb car, you need a TOUGH tranny to get there.
