Question

I recently bought a 1971 RS/SS396 from a friend. He tells me that the car is all original #'s matching vehicle. I've decoded both the Trim Tag and the VIN and they do indeed match what is seen on the car. I moved on to finding the engine code and cannot find it. I've read that the code should be on a machined pad at the right front of the head (behind the alternator), but its not there. Am I looking in the wrong place or is the fact that it is not there an indication that the engine may not be original to the car? I should note that the engine runs very strong, looks and sounds like a 396, but I can't be sure. Any help in locating the engine #'s would be appreciated. Thanks

If the block has been rebuilt and was 'Decked' a little heavy it could have removed the original assembly code and VIN numbers from the Ident. Pad behind the Alt.
Try posting the casting number from the block (in rear on drivers [left] side) and any casting date numbers you can find on the rear passenger [right] side.
There should also be a partial VIN number down by the Oil Filter on the edge of the block. These are very hard to find and/or see sometimes so clean the area well and use a good light to help locate. This should match your VIN and support the car is 'matching' - if it is.
BTW- you can also locate the trans and rearend numbers and decode to see if they are 'matching'. Go to www.nastyz28.com for more info on decode for your car.
