Question

I have a 69 SS with the stock 3.07 posi rear end. What performace percentage can I get by increasing the gears to a higher number (say 3.31). If there a formula to figure this out. I am looking for a general percentage because of all the factors involeved.

Also what effect dose the higher gear ratio have on the overall perforamce? Dose everthing you gain at the low end get lost at the top end (RPM). I know you gas milage will go due to running higher RPM's.

Hey does anyone know the formula for calculating the the gain with the high numbered gears? Hp/Torque

I would think the top end perfomace would seriously be affected my the higher numbered gears.

Thanks

Personally, I dont think you would gain enough from such a small change in gear ratios to justify the cost and effort. Your talking maybe a couple of tenths in the 1/4 mile at best. You could get the same effect by going to a slightly shorter rear tire.

one or both may have what your looking for ?

as for the 3.08's to the 3.31's, will notice some differance, but the 3.55's would be a better choice , so i feel.

I am surpised to hear that there is not a really diffence between the 3.07 and 3.31 rear gears. I am causious about going any higher on the gear ratio due to losses at the top end. Thank's for the input.

I went 3.08 to 3.31 and would say there is a SLIGHT difference....but the main reason was that I went from an open carrier to a posi.

Lemme know if you want any help...

Your 1/4 mile MPH, horsepower, will not be affected by gear ratio. It will stay within 1 mph.
