Guys I'm getting close to start up my LS1 used engine. It's been a while the engine did not run like 6 months I assume. What can I do before fire up the engine?
And what clearence should be betwwen oil pick-up tube and bottom of the oil pan?

i prime mine by taking the distributer out and turning the oil pump rod with a long screw driver it takes a little while to do it with a screw driver so be patient.i have heard of some people doing it by leaving the plug wires off and just turning it over.i put my oil pump pick up as close to the pan as i can get it with out it touching.

you should be able to get an oil pump priming tool that fits on a drill motor, then just inset it in place of the dist. there is no way you can properly prime it by hand w/ a screwdriver. clearance between pan and pick up should be about a 1/4 inch. hope that helps

With an LS1 engine, I'd remove the spark plugs, squirt oil into the cylinders, remove the ignition wire to disable, wire open the throttle, place a large battery close by, attach remote starter button, and crank for 15-20 seconds at two minute intervals between cranking.

Remove oil fill plug to see rockers being lubed, watch oil pressure gauge.

LOL... reminds me what i did last month when i swapped in a new motor into my truck...
got it all bolted together, in the truck, then took off the distributor wire to prime the motor before start up. cranked it, coundn't figure why isn't the oil pressure gomming up..... looked down to see a nice puddle forming... probably lost about 1 1/2 quarts before i realized i forgot to put the filter on....

so don't do what i did.....lol.... remember to check everything before you crank(especially the filter and drain plug).

I used the priming tool and drill. Be careful to use a powerful drill as it is possible to burn up the drill's motor.

I believe that the oil pump on an LS1 is crank driven, not distributor driven (I don't think it even has a distributor) so you will have to do like Everett said, use the starter to crank the engine over in short bursts with no plugs in it until oil pressure comes up.

There is no distrubitor on this engine. I will do what Everret suggested.

duhhhh.. i guess that teaches me to read posts closer, i didn't notice the tell-tale ls-1 in the description. oh well it was late and my good eye must have been closed...

As the the school teacher said after giving out the tests, "Read The full fricking question before answering."

I always forgot to think before answering.

I forgot to include in the instructions is to include removing the fuel pump fuse or relay. You don't want fuel flooding the cylinders while cranking. Oil will become diluted.

yeah and then you get what was described in Markm post on hard starting when the gas trickled down into the oil pan.... that must have been a sight.....blow the valve covers and oil pan off....
