I'm really having trouble finding a 7 tooth drive gear for a TH350 trans. Especially the drive gear, I've found the driven gears at NAPA, Dealers, trans shops etc. Just not the drive gear.

If anyone else has a gear combo that will work here's the specs:

69 Camaro with 4.11 gears, 26.6" tall tires and a TH350 trans with small speedo gears.

We are currently trying to get a 7 tooth drive / 22 tooth driven set.

Thanks a lot for any help.

ps. The GM countermen I talked to (even at Berger Chevrolet believe it or not) have not been any help at all.

Is it the same gear as used in a Muncie?

If so, D&L Transmissions lists a nylon one for a 27 spline Muncie.

Thanks Joe! Looks like they have both the driven and the drive gears.

Does anyone know for sure if the Muncie and TH350 gears are interchangeable?

They have a section on speedo gears and a test method to determine what gears you need.

I'm going through the same thing with my 410 gears and a TH350.

Eric,

I bought mine at a local Chevy dealer if I remember right (Team Cheverolet, Vallejo Ca). I have 4.10's, but I just can't remember what color gear/s I had to use. I am not sure at all though.
Sounds like you already know what you need, so it is a matter of finding them. If you can't find them locally let me know and I will see if I can get them and mail them to you.

Rick's may have answered my question about Muncie vs TH350 drive gears. Right above the speedo gear listing they state, "All transmissions except TH400." That seems to imply that the gears should fit 'glide, Muncie, Saginaw, and TH350. The only thing Ricks doesn't do is tell me how many teeth their drive gears have - they only list the color which doesn't seem to match up with other color schemes I've seen so far.

The dandltransmission site DOES give color and tooth combination for Muncie speedo gears, which seems like it would work after reading the statement in the Rick's catalog.

I called TCI and although they give colors, tooth combinations, and formulas on their site they do not sell speedo gears. FWIW they said their street-fighter transmissions all come with the purple drive gear.

ps. Royce thanks a lot for the offer, but I'd feel like an idiot if I had to have you find them in CA and ship them to me in MI! LOL.

Do a search on this subject, I bought a speed reduction box and I believe a 20-tooth gear for a 4.11 ratio. This is where I got my info.

I believe the GM P/N for the box is 3892222.

Did you see the procedure in Rick's catalog about driving on a road with mile markers and timing the distance traveled over two mile markers? It's there, take a look again and you'll see what I'm talking about. There is a chart posted there. That should get you in the ballpark for determing the gears you'll need.

I think that the TH350 uses the nylon version of the 1.84" OD speedometer gear, not the steel version. I beleive it was pinned on with a retaining pin. The steel one might work, but how do you get it onto the output shaft of the tranny and how would you retain it to the shaft, since the steel one does not have a hole in it. I know that 3 or 4 years ago the part was not available for a TH350.

The TH350 trans uses a retaining clip, a flat piece of 1/4 inch wide bowed spring steel ina slot on the shaft and a recess on the driving gear, to hold the plastic gear onto the output shaft.

All the rest are press fit and made of steel.

I saw the write up in Rick's, it just tells you how to find your speedo error by using mile markers and converting it to teeth.

We finally found a way to get the right 7/22 gear set. We found a "jobber" transmission parts place that would order them. The hardest part was just finding a counter guy that knew what we were talking about and where to look. Even this transmission parts supplier had to go to one supplier for the drive gear and another supplier for the driven gear! I think there are less and less people that carry these parts and know what they are.

BTW I searched for hours - both here and the Team Chevelle site and found a few useful tidbits, but nothing that really laid out a good supplier for the drive gears. Lots of good stuff on calculating the right ratios though.

ps. That little dang clip that holds on the drive gear is a real PITA. I always seem to break these suckers and everyone else must too, because all the counter guys seemed to know exactly what I was talking about!
