Question

Help me understand what I'm looking at. In the slot below where the keeper sits is something that looks like a valve seal, but it seems to be metalic and is very brittle. Is this a rubber seal way past being any good, or something peculiar to stock 400s? Thanks for the help.

shred,
It is a rubber "O" ring. They get pretty brittle over the years, but they will come off with a small pick or screwdriver. They are definitely not metal.

Bill,
That's what I thought but seemed like a good idea to check. Those things are not what I would call rubber any more. Very hard and brittle. I'll chip them off and put new rubber on. Thanks

Just a quick tip when installing o-ring seals. Make sure you compress the spring and retainer BEFORE you slip the seal over the valvestem, then put the keepers in place and release spring. If you put seal on first, then spring and retainer, retainer usually pushes seal down valvestem.

Thanks. Back to the beginning I guess. Haven't finished one side yet so not too much to redo.
