has anybody done this ? what's involved ?
i now have 4 speed in car, m-20. car won't
be raced. or, should just go with a 454 motor
& 700r4? now have a 396 in car. need ideas,
not wishes. will beefed trans handle either
motor? don't want to jump off deep end here.
appreciate any thoughts/experiences. will
floor hump have to be modified? header size?
have 1 3/4" headers now. thanks.

Your engine choices are nearing the limit of what an automatic can handle. The transmission will have to be beefed up I imagine. Have you considered the 200-4R instead of the 700-R4? I personally don't have any experience with the 200-4R, but many people say it can be made to handle more torque than the 700-R4. Also, the 700-R4 has a deep first gear and the 200-4R does not. Since your BB motor will be capable of lots of low end torque, the 200-4R might be a better choice.

i'm trying to get some ideas together. diff
diff in crate motor price between 425/454 and
502/502 is only $1300. should i stay with
4 speed /3.08 rear with 502 or go with 700r4
and 425/454? does 502 have prov. for mech.
fuel pump? thought about rebuilding a used
454 but can't find decent one.would be lot
cheaper. i don't need extra power, but the
502 alum head would look real tough under
the hood. thanks for your reply,dnult.

Jerry,
I pulled a '70 Vette 454/390HP out of my Camaro and dropped in the 502. The 454 has been torn down, hot tanked and magnafluxed and is ready to be built back up. Also the heads, rods and steel crank have been cleaned and magged. It is the stock bore and should probably be bored, but other than that, it ran incredible when I had it.

When I bought the car the seller told me it had forged flat top pistons in it and square port heads, well, after a year and a half of driving it, the #3 piston shedded it's skirts into the oilpan. Upon tear down, found out they are cast pistons(stock), oval port heads and the engine has never been bored. Which means they honed the cylinders, stuck in a set of rings on the old pistons and sold the car.

I have everything to build the engine back up except for pistons and a bearing kit. the engine is still at the machine shop.

I am in San Diego, but if you're interested let me know and we could check on shipping prices.
