FYI, I came across this post on the Fiero Forum in a thread on Squeaky wipers. What to try? and thought it was interesting enough to post here.

I remember seeing a show on the History Channel about 55 thru 57 Chevys,and they talked about that.They said the Bonami roughed up the cylinders and seated the rings on the early 265s.On guy said Chevrolet had a Sevice Bulliton out back then to do just that.When I had my 55 Chevy a few years ago,A hard core Ford guy came up to me at a car show and asked me why I didn't build a 55 Ford.My reply was,I didn't know they built a 55 Ford..Ha Ha Ha..

That is interesting, but you know machining techniques, pistons and rings have come a loooooong way since '55.

Can you still buy Bon Ami?

Yup, Bon Ami is still available.

But don't ask if the machine shop stocks it! Ha!

Bon Ami really does work well on windshields. We used it a lot on new cars that had chattering blades.

We heard something about environmental fallout, and normal glass cleaners wouldn't cut it.

Let me tell you about bon-ami and rings. When double moly rings first came out they were terrible. The second ring would not wipe the cylinders correctly so they burned oil in large quantities. A guy I went to school with got the bright idea to use bon-ami to make the rings seat. He hooked up a can to the ported vacuum side of the carb and down the road he went. Buy the time he got back even the lifter bores were so oversize they couldn't be used without sleeving. If you think your motor is too tight definately the cheapiest way of loosening it up.

My first garage job was rebuilding construction equipment and we used bon ami to seat the rings quickly so the machines could go back into service. I would never do/recommend that for our street machines. The reason is worked was due to its abrasiveness.
