I just got 200 miles on my 454 motor with edelbrock alum heads. I have about 20 psi at idle 800rpm. Then at about 3000 rpm oil psi tops at 50 psi then doesn't move until 5000 and above. and get this, starts to drop. I get scared and let go on gas. Any ideas please help.
Thanks.
P.s I have a stock oil pan and check oil level...

Sounds like the oil pump pickup is too close to the bottom of the pan. Try a thinner oil and see if it continues to rise and does not drop off after 5,000 RPM.

Are you running a hi-volume oil pump?

If you plan to hit 5000 on a regular basis a windage tray is in order. Could be that the oil is starting to foam up, hitting the crank (make it worse) and being blown out the dipstick tube.

Do you have a breather system, PCV, etc?

Yea, pCV on the pass side and a breather on driver. Someone from melling told me I have to run a closed system, so no breather just a oil cap.

A high volume pump really needs a higher volume oil pan. My guess is that at 5000 rpm you're pumping the pan dry (not literally but close).
