uhhh, how can you tell which powerglide has the different ratios in it. Like from the exterior of the tranny, can you get a casting number or something to identify which ratio it is. Thanks

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that all the glides came with the same first gear. When you get one aftermarket, you can then get a lower first gear.

Again, I am not possitive.

I have heard that the ones that came behind the 6 cylinder engines are the ones that got the higher first gear ratio.

6 cyl and some low HP 283 powerglides had a 1.82 first gear and higher HP v8 powerglides had a 1.76 first gear. The 1.76 is more desirable because the planetary gears are much stronger. I don't know any way to tell them apart externally.

huh, thanks alot. That helps some, so if its behind a 327 chances are good that it has 1.76. I would like to find a way from finding out from the outside, cause most of them at the junkyard have been pulled off already.

There is a difference in the input shaft.I dont remember what it is though. If the trans is out, just pull out the shaft.Seems like the sealing rings are moved a little bit?

Ditch the Pg and go with a TH350. That extra gear makes a big difference. I've got one sitting in my garage with a converter for $100. It will need new seals since it has been sitting for 6+ years. You'll alson need one of the conversion kits for the console shifter if that's what you have.

I'm with the rest of the guys. Have only heard of a aftermarket ratio.

Hope your using it on the strip or keeping your car original, beyond that I couldn't imagine why you'd want one. Switched mine out for a 700r4 felt like I added a 100hp (I could actually lite up the tires). Got used to that feeling so now I really do need more hp. Kinda like a drug, aint it.

I was just looking for them cause there is some guys that will pay bucks for them, if I can find some with 1.76 ratio's.

I guess they are getting hard to find, by the way that guy talks. And just to know for personal knowledge, I am a manual trans kind of guy myself.
