For a 1971 350 is the timing tab top dead center or is it around 2 oclock? Or where the heck is it. Got a new one to replace the missing one and kinda think it would be nice to put it in the right place.

The timing tab is spot welded on an OEM timing cover. It is located at approximately 1:30. If you have an aftermarket tab, it should be bolted on cover so that the tab covers the span between 1 and 2 O'Clock. Hope this helps a little. As for TDC, you can do a quick non-scientific check by pulling the number one plug and with a small awl, check the location of the top of the piston on the compression stroke. When it reaches the top and starts to go back down, turn it back to the top. That is approximately TDC. Now you can see where the groove on your balancer is. Do not turn the balancer by the mounting bolt. Buy a balancer turning tool, you don't want to strip the threads on the crank. Good Luck

Thanks for the info. It's an L48. I don't remember my 70's Impala Custom's 350 having a water pump like this 350. A real pain getting behind it.
