Exclamation

I just purchased a really nice 67 RS Camaro that is in good shape. It has been running nicely. I am not sure of the year of the engine, but it is a Super Sport 350. When I first got it, the fan belt only squealed for a few seconds when it first started. Just recently, the belt has been squealing constantly whenever the gas pedal is depressed. The belts look like they are new and the tread is not worn. I looked at them and when the engine is running, the belts squeal and flutter side to side in one spot. They are not too loose on the pulleys. Any recommendations?

I heard somewhere that toothpaste can stop the squealing of the fan belt. Anyone know about this?

Tighten up on the belt tension just a hair. Congrats on your new ride.

If it still sqeaks, change the belt and check pulley alignment. Its a good thing to have pulleys aligned with each other.

I agree tighten the belt/s up a bit. The squeak you hear is caused by the belt slipping. IF the belt are old, they may still "look" good but actually are not (could be hard, stiff). If all else fails grab a bar of soap and CAREFULLY rub it on the belt (inside of the belt as it turns). This is an old trick and it is NOT a permanent fix. It is always better to fix the actual problem rather that put a band aid on it.

Samuel, welcome to the site. To check to see if the belt is squeeking, while the car is running, carefully apply some water to the inside part of the belt...if the squeek stops, its the belt, if not look for a bearing, worn sheave, etc. If it's the belt and you don't have a spare, short term solution would be to reverse the belt...most times that will stop the squeek...for a while... If it looks good, but its shiney on the sides, as stated before, replace it.good luck...Mike

If the belt is properly tightened, in good shape and still squeals, a shot of WD40 should quiet it right down. I ususally do it with the engine running - just be careful of the fan.

A frequent cause of squealing belts is when engine coolant (anti freeze) finds its way onto them.

i always use the thick yellow marking crayom(found in most garages)seems to last quite a while.but again be very careful when applying!
but i must agree with dawg.replace the belt and tighten until there is 1/2"movement when finger pressure is applied 1/2 way between the two pulleys that are the farthest apart.with the engine stopped!!!!!!!!
congrats on the new ride!
