Doh! While traveling last year, I ran across a great deal on a set of vortec heads - $300.00 for the pair. I didn't have any way to verify #s on what I was buying so I trusted the seller. I am now about ready to start assembly. Something deep inside reminded me to check #s on heads. Mortec lists them as 87-up 305/350 1.94/1.5. #[email protected]%&@! Are these worthless? Part #14102193. Since I already have all the vortec specific stuff (vortec intake, valve covers, etc.), should I just bite the bullit and buy new vortecs? Are the heads I have compatible with the intake? Are they even worth using? [img]graemlins/sad.gif[/img]

Don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but, those heads a pretty bad. They are the TBI swirl port heads.

Pull an intake valve out and check the bowl area. There will be a ramp that blocks off half the bowl under the valve.

The Vortec intake has a completely different bolt pattern. Won't bolt up.

A67 is correct...those heads are junk for just about anything. I would sell them for whatever you could get out of them, and get some real vortecs.

I wouldn't say the swirl port heads are complete junk, just not much good for making upper rpm horsepower. They were designed to be used in pickup trucks, so they do make pretty good low rpm torque, probably up to about 4000. I used a set on the 355 I built for my brother's 52 chevy street rod, just a mild setup and he loves it. Of course anything would have more guts than the old straight six he had before.
Since you already have the rest of the stuff needed for vortec heads, I agree, get the vortec heads and maybe you can recoup a few bucks by selling the 193 heads to someone else.

QAZ69SS, I have a set of Vortec heads (real ones) that I don't need, I have decided to go with a carb'ed LT1. If you are interested, I'm sure we could work something out. E-mail me.

i've had a couple of my friends claim they had Vortec heads- they thought that the center bolt valve covers made them into "Vortec" heads. they were trying to figure out why i was so happy when i got my set of real Vortecs fairly cheap at a stock car swap meet, because the junk yards are full of what they thought were valuable Vortec heads..

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

Heck, even paying new price for a completed set from some of the places, they are still a bargain to me!!

Or buy bare castings and do your own thing..
