Service manual indicates 80 inch pounds. I'm using a foot pound torque wrench, can anyone tell me if there is a formula to convert inch to feet?

Yeah, divide by 12

80 in/lbs = 6-2/3 ft/lbs. Sounds a little loose for bellhousing bolts IMO.

My 68 chassis service manual says 35 ft/lbs. BUT, I just get mine about as tight as I can with a normal length 9/16" Craftsman wrench.

I use the wrench to tighten because thats what I have to use to take them loose with the engine and trans in the car. I remember torquing them to about 35 lb/ft once and later had to pull the tranny with the engine in the car -- what a bear trying to get them loose with an ordinary wrench

Thanks Eric...My engine is going together now. I used my air ratchet so I'm assuming they will be tight enough. I was thinking the divide by 12 also but the number I came up with was the same as yours...too loose for me.

The 80 inch-pounds sounds about right for the 4 screws that hold the flywheel cover to the bellhousing.

The other larger bolts usualy get the "one grunt-pound" hand calibrated torque specification from my knuckle busting manual. [img]redface.gif[/img]

A split ring lockwasher is a good idea on those as well.
