Question

I'm looking at a engine and the person that
owns it says it a 302 z/28. I can't find any
markings on it that say engine code MO,MP or
DZ. Where should the markings be? On the right front of motor it says E3314 0 6. On the back left it says 3970010. The heads say
8991492. The crank has 1178 on it and the pistons have L2209A. Its also a 4 bolt main block. To me everything is telling me its a 69 Z/28 302.What do you think? I'd like to be sure before I buy it.

Thanks for all the help now and in the past,
Dave

ragtop68,
I don't know what the E331406 is. The 3970010 number can be a 302 ('69) or a 350 ('69 to '80) and can be either a 2-bolt or 4-bolt. Obviously, if it's a Z motor it will be a 4-bolt. The head number 8991492 should be 3991492. These heads were installed on '70 LT1 motors (Vettes and Z's) and were also a '71 and up replacement head. The 1178 crank only came out on the '69 302 ('69 is the only large journal 302) and is steel with a two piece rear mail seal. The pistons I can't help you with that, but I am sure the guys here can help. Sounds like you may have found yourself a '69 DZ 302. Good luck and keep us posted on what you find out.

Later,

Rick

Except for the heads, that is. The heads should have a casting number like: 3927186, 3947041 and ?

Need a little help here.

The pad stamp indicates that the block is a warranty replacement, built in June, 1970 (these were generally supplied as short-blocks, re-using the original heads). The heads are wrong - should be 3927186 (same casting number was used for SS350's, but they used smaller [1.94/1.50] valves, and later SS350's used the 3947041, also with the smaller valves) - the 7186 heads for the DZ engine had 2.02/1.60 valves. The 3991492 heads you have were used on 1973 Camaro/Corvette 350's. Looks like you have a 302 factory replacement short block with heads from a 1973 350.

Thanks for all the help. Looks like I have
a 302 but the heads are wrong. Now I just need to know what heads are better, and what the cc are in both.

Thanks for all the help,
Dave

ragtop68,
The heads for a '69 302 are 3927186 and 3947041. Both part numbers should have screw-in-stud, guideplates and 2.02 heads. Both are also 64cc heads. There are many aftermarket heads that will perform better, just make sure you get them in the 64cc version. I personally have the World Sportsman II's, 2.02/ 1.6, screw-in-studs, guideplates and 64cc's - a lot nicer set of heads then the 30 year old ones.

Do you know what cc the 3991492 are? I have a set of those with guide plates and screw in studs.Don't know what valves they are.
Thanks,
Dave

The 3991492 heads are 64cc and are very similiar to the factory heads on a 302. If you don't care about "numbers matching", then you should be good to go. My information shows that the 492 heads are 2.02"/ 1.6".
