Are 350 and 400 starters different ? My old 350 starter won't bolt into the new 400. The pinion housing hits the flexplate. Any recommendations ?

Are you using the 350 flexplate as well? Sounds like the 400 has a 168 tooth flexplate while 350 had 153 tooth, smaller diameter flexplate. You will have to get different starter if that is the case.
