Engine oil for 572 BB

Hi guys.

I'm a newb here, so apologies for any rookie mistakes.

I've got a '67 Camaro and it's currently having a 572 BB plumbed in.

The break-in's almost done, but I have no idea which is the best engine oil to use going forwards.

I had a search around the site, but after reading flat tappets need this and old engines require that, I wasn't much closer.

Names like Driven Hot Rod, Mobil 1 High Mileage, Amsoil and Valvoline keep cropping up, but again I'm not sure which of these brands - if any - are right.

The engine is brand new, so zero mileage. Sorry if that's all a bit vague info wise.

Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Alex.

Who built the engine, and what do they recommend?

Valvoline vr-1 10w30 or 20w50, great oil that is carried by all of the chain stores and is only $5-6, has all the zinc you need

Re: Engine oil for 572 BB

I agree use Valvoline VR1 racing oil 10w30. I use it in my 496 c.i. BBC engine for my 67 Camaro. I purchase it by the case from Napa Auto Parts because I have a 7 qt. oil pan.

Re: Engine oil for 572 BB

Hi guys.

Sorry for the late reply, work's been manic and I had fun and games logging in.

The engine manufacturer got back to me in the end and suggested Joe Gibb's Driven Racing oil.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, much appreciated.

Cheers.

Re: Engine oil for 572 BB

Here is a list of breakin oils. Royal Purple, Joe Gibbs Racing, Amsoil Breakin Oil, Driven Racing Oil, Comp Cams Breakin Oil, and Lucas Engine Breakin Oil. I used Comp Cams Breakin Oil even with a roller cam. Then changed to Valvoline VR1 10w30 the same day.

Re: Engine oil for 572 BB

Is that R1 universally recognized as the oil to use?

Re: Engine oil for 572 BB

I'd agree with following the builder's guidelines, at least as pertains to the weight. If you want to run a full synthetic, I'd run a conventional hydrocarbon oil for the first 3000 miles or so to break it in, then switch. I read a bit to quick, do you have a roller motor, if so I don't think that the zinc content is a big concern, but if flat tappet, zinc content is very important. If you're not concerned about the zinc I swear by Mobil 1 and have used it for years in my daily drivers. Goes to say using a top quality name brand filter is a must, skip the house brand X filter.

If you have a flat tappet engine it is one of the recommended oils. I have used it in both my old school 350's with good results.
