I have a 89 RS it had a 305 TBI, but i rebuilt a 350 out of a 95 truck, it drives fine, but it idles up and down eratically, i adjusted the idle screw and the timeing so it idles at about 500 RPM and drives nicely, is this what i should have done or is there an underlying problem

Really not enough info there to help diagnose for sure what was/is going on.

There are minor differences in the 350 vs. 305 TBI systems. However, it should not make a huge difference (at idle).

My guess is your timing is not right at base and you compensated for the problem with an idle adjustment.

Check the same year truck in a TBI with a 350 and see if the base timing is the same as the 305. Also, are you using the full 350 balancer...etc?

Your 350 balancer could have slipped a bit causing what you are seeing on the timing light to be off by a few degrees.

You might also want to adjust base idle with a vacuum gauge looking for max vacuum then taking note of actual base timing.
