68 Camaro with a bbc

Hello everyone long time reader 1st time poster. Got a problem maybe someone can advise me on.

I have a 68 Camaro ss/rs originally came with a 327 but was later change to a 396 everything was converted by who ever except the motor frame mounts, which brings me to my questions, I built a 454 and going ahead and putting new headers in it, bought the big block frame mounts and tall motor mounts put a few washers on the driver side to clear the power steering box and everything cleared just like the post I found here said it would. now to the passenger side even with no washers in the driver side the motor mount misses the hole on the frame mount by about an inch, tried tall mount, short mount same thing misses about an inch and to top it off the header on the passenger side hits the frame! The motor is dead center in the car and level. Headers are hookers 2457's

My thought would be sleeve the mount and ding the header on the passenger side.

Any thoughts on this or anyone that has seen this happen before?

Thanks in advance

Nick

There isn't a tall or short mount. You either have the 67/68 BBC frame stands that use the short and wide engine mounts or you have the 69 BBC frame stands that use the tall and narrow engine mounts. The BBC stands will shift the engine 1/2" to the passenger side. If you measure from the carburetor stud to each fender, the driver's side measurement should be 1" longer. You also need to change the transmission crossmember to a big block piece. This will match the frame stands with the proper 1/2" to the passenger side and 3/4's" forward. If you don't do this your engine will sit crooked. Take your washers out, if you use the correct parts you won't need them.

69 Camaro -originally a LM1 car. 327, Edelbrock E-streets, hooker, DUI performance distributors, ultradyne cam, stewart, TRW etc. Vintage Air, AGR steering, Corbeau GTSII seats, 700R4 transmission, 12-bolt w/Eaton 4.11:1

Yes sir, I have the 67/68 bb frame stands, if I use the short and wide the headers nail the steering box, if I use the tall and narrow with washers it misses and clears.

Re: 68 Camaro with a bbc

I bought the Big Block Engine Mount Kit (part # AEM-67FB) from Ground-Up...That fixed the same problem I had with the gear box and no problem with the frame mounts or motor mounts lining up...Before I switched over to stock exhaust manifolds I had Hooker headers as well but that was years ago so I can't recall what part number I was running.

Not sure if this will help.

Re: 68 Camaro with a bbc

If you have any part number on the frame stands see if they match any of these. 67-68 frame stands: 3912089 (L) 3912090 (R) Repro. 3912597 (L) 3912598 (R). 1968 mounts 6258154 (2). 1969 frame stands: 3980941 (L) 3980942 (R), 3950113 (L) 3950114 (R) Repro. 69 mounts 3990918 (2) Auto ZONE Part # 2283 made in USA. Measurements for Frame stand 3950113 2.5" from base to top of bracket. 1.75" from base to C/L of bolt hole. Frame stand 3950114 2.0" from base to top of bracket. 1 3/8" from base to C/L of bolt hole. 67-68 mounts 2 5/8 inside of the two tabs for bolts. 69 mounts 2 3/8 inside of the two tabs for bolts BB Crossmember TH400 GM 3912573, GM 3899006 for 3 spd, 4 spd, TH350, and Power Glide. If you have purchased any aftermarket or imported mounts they have the wrong measurements. BTW if you have aftermarket heads with raised exhaust ports the Hooker headers 2457HKR will not fit.

Great info! I bought the goodmark big block mounts from summit I bet you that's the problem! The heads are stock 454 iron heads but now that u mention raised heads they do look taller than the ones on my 396..

Your engine should not be "Dead centered" as you say. Again, if you don't have the big block transmission crossmember your headers will not fit correctly !

For future reference : The 67/68 BBC frame stands must use the short and wide engine mounts. The 69 BBC frame stands must use the tall and narrow engine mounts. The tall and narrow engine mounts will not even fit over the 67/68 BBC frame stands. When stands were manufactured by GM you couldn't install the short and wide mounts on the 69 BBC frame stands. On reproduction's you can (but should not) as your oil pan will sit on the crossmember and there is a gap between the mounts. This gap has a possibility of the engine moving forward or backward by about an 1/8 " each way. That doesn't sound like much but it may be your header clearance.

I can't stress enough that you must use a big block transmission crossmember ! Small Block transmission crossmembers are centered and BBC mounts are the required 1/2" to the passenger side and 3/4" forward of the small blocks location. Many aftermarket companies do not make their crossmember's correctly. (Non-stock applications like for a 700R4 or a T56.) Your engine will sit crooked and headers will be hard to fit.

Re: 68 Camaro with a bbc

Take the measurements for the frame stands to see if they match the measurements in post #5. The 67-68 frame brackets are 2-1/2 inches wide (but not the same as SB) and use the same engine mounts as 67-68 302ci and 350ci part #6258154 (2). Auto Zone 67-68 Camaro motor mount part #2285. I have a pair of 67-68 frame stands and I will measure them this afternoon late. BTW if you have stock 454 heads they are not raised. The casting numbers is under the valve cover between the rocker arms.
