well its a 400 small block and when i first start it my oil pressure is like 65 but once it warms up it is 25 pounds in (park) and once i put it in gear it drops to 17 pounds of oil pressure , but going down the road it sits on about 50 do u think that is bad for a small block chevy? thanks for the help
(has 20k on it and doesnt smoke or any thing like that and o yeh is it true that a high volume oil pump on a 5 quart oil pan will suck the oil pan dry , i also heard that lifters have a metering device that controls how much goes up to the motor) .

How hot is your engine running? What oil are you running? I really don't think you have a problem unless pressure drops off when reving or under load. If you're getting 10psi per 1000rpm or better and your lifters are staying wet (no clacking) and the pressure climbs when reving it don't swet it!!

Its just a loose motor. Mine will drop below 20 PSI at about 900 RPM idle. As soon as you come off idle the pressure shots right up.

I would not worry...

What does it mean if the pressure drops under a load?

Mark is right. If it goes up with the revs you're OK. The rule of thumb is 10 psi per 1000 rpms.

camaro79tx,

I have the same "issue" in my 67 with a 72 350. I installed a Melling high volume/high pressure oil pump two years ago. Pressure is at 65-70psi at cold startup, hot (temp stays at 180-190 degrees) driving is at about 40-50psi and hot idle is at about 15 psi. Been driving this everyday since I put the pump in with the stock oil pan and haven't had any problems whatsoever. I've taken several 600+ mile trips in it too, without any issues. I am not worried, and I think you should be fine too.

My brand new 383 is like 65-70 cold at startup,40-50 around town, and 19-20 at idle,in park after warmup too. You'll be fine.
