Re: 302 engine oil

You're going to get many varied answers for this question. Many of which will be correct. I use Brad Penn 30w. I don't drive in the winter, car is stored.

69 SS, 350/300 h.p., M-20, 12 bolt, matching numbers.

Re: 302 engine oil

You didn't mention the type camshaft so I would assume its flat tappet. Gibbs or the Penn oil would be good .

Yes sir , FT. I have Mobil 1 Synthetic in it now. I was told by several local friends that I should be using diesel 15-40. Thank you for the reply.

Diesel Oil is nothing special anymore. Move to catalytic converters on diesels has resulted in ZDDP being lowered in diesel oil just like passenger car oil. To be safe, use the the Brad Penn oil or any high ZDDP oil. DO NOT buy a ZDDP additive and add it to you oil . Messes up the additive package the refiner put in the oil.

Re: 302 engine oil

I'm not a fan of BP oil. I like Lucas or Valvaline Racing.

Would not use mobile 1 syn on a flat tap cam

Re: 302 engine oil

Top oil for film strength Pennzoil Ultra 5W30. Close second is 5W30 Chevron Supreme Conventinal. The Gibbs oil just makes it into the acceptable category for film strength.

You are getting a little more lobe protection using the diesal 15-40 . I have a roller tappet motor but I also use the Rotella T 15-40. No Syn here. If you are still in doubt, do a search on this site for the subject.

I also have a 302 (with FT) and have been using valvoline with the Lucas Zinc Plus ZDDP additive. Curious as to how this will mess up the refiner's original package. As an additive, wouldn't it just reinforce the ZDDP concentration as intended and not be detrimental? I'd planned to use Delo 15w40 for my next change, ZDDP is about 1200 ppm in that oil. For what it's worth, Chevy High Performance magazine used to feature a tech column by Kevin McClelland (unfortunately no longer) and he recommended the Delo and had good luck with it in his motors.
