Hello guys needing help on setting the timing car sat in the shop for 2 years after my father put hei on it and I can't seem to get the timing right on it I can get it to TDC an stab it right on number one a still don't have enough room to get it running right any help would be great

What year Camaro and the HEI distributor needs to me removed and move it where you can adjust it to get the right degree.

67 an it won't be pointing a number 1 then

The distributor in the picture is not HEI

stab it where you can get room to rotate it for adjustment and move the wires on the cap so the rotor is at #1 TDC.

Also are you TDC on compression stroke?

I can move the cap but if I stab it with he rotor is at 1 on TDC the vacuum adv is in the way an can't rotate the cap far enough to get it in time

Then move all the plug wires on the cap over 1 spot either way so the VA does not hit

Moving wires off of their proper terminal is lazy man's way to do it. Chances are, you are using the wrong post as the #1 terminal. The #1 terminal on a HEI is the second terminal/post from the tach wire. My guess is you are using the terminal post right next to the tach wire as #1. This would cause you to clock the housing over too far clockwise causing the vacuum advance to be too close to the firewall. A properly installed HEI has the vacuum advance at a 45 degree angle to the firewall and the tach/batt terminal paralell with the firewall. Learn how to do it right and awe all your friends.

but when you post incorrect info it gets you responses that may be counterproductive

An HEI distributor is NOT the same as a standard distributor with a pertronix added. HEI #1 terminal is at 5:30 looking down at cap while stock cap it is at 6:30.

Pull number one plug. If you have a two piece compression tester screw it in the hole but don't connect the gauge. hold you finger over the end and have someone bump the starter. If you don't have a gauge put you thumb over the spark plug hole. when the cylinder comes up on compression you finger will blow off and you will hear a Pfft. Stop bumping the starter and turn the engine clockwise by hand using the belts or fly wheel until the timing marks line up. Pull the distributor and position the vacuum advance where you want it ( normally points to right front headlight) Have the rotor point to #1 on the cap when fully in the block (use the stock points distributor diagram for reference) Check that the wires are on cap properly and it should start and run with just a little twist to the front of the vacuum advance.
