Anyone use this before? Loctite 1158514

Anyone use this for head bolt thread sealer before? Looks like a relatively new product.

Never used it, usually use the GM thread sealant.

Loctite Red? What am I missing here, Have always used it for thread locker. But paying $25 for that tube is over my head. What are you trying to seal that teflon or rtv won't seal?

I buy enough for one job and normally the small tube will lay around in the top box and dry up or spill or I will forget about it . Got several in other boxes dried up.

Head bolts I use Permatex #2 and the shellac gasket sealer.

Just looking around at alternative head bolt thread sealers. Its an anaerobic sealer, similar to what I used when I rebuilt the Muncie. Seems like most use things that really weren't designed specifically for head bolt threads, although they work great. This one was specifically named as a head bolt thread/water jacket sealer, so thought I'd ask. I will probably use the Permatex aviation form a gasket next time around. Seems like many like that one, as the Permatex high temp stuff didn't work well for me.

Hey Doug. I ditched the aviation sealant and picked up a tube of this from the local dealer. Looks like the part number has changed to 19333512. Do you re-torque aluminum heads? The reposition time of this is only 4 hours, so I've read that some do and some don't, but seems that GM doesn't if they are using this sealant on head bolts?

I do not re-torque bolts unless required. Once the bolt stretch is made, I'm done.

Also, I only re-use head bolts one time and only if I installed them new

Does that include ARP head bolts? $85 is having a hard time falling out of my pocket. . I called ARP in the past, and they said head bolts could be reused, but not sure how many times. This will be the third time around on his set I think. Never TTY'd them.

How about arp studs? Problem with cheaper knock off bolts or stud, you break one off in block, you have to pull that head. You can use the sealers listed or Permatex Indian head shellac.

Thanks Don. I think I'll use the ARP bolts again. They've never been stretched or over torqued, so should be good to go.

$85 is cheap insurance Vs. a rebuild due to coolant in the oil trashing bearings.

3rd time...."you think" <== this is where there could be an issue ?

Never torqued head bolts ? This is how the clamp the gasket and hold over the heat/cool cycle.

Think of them like a balloon...new they stretch easy and inflate with some resistance (bolts stretch, not inflated), now inflate/deflate 100 times....eventually the balloon looks like a big raisin with the elasticity all but gone.
Now think how many times your bolts did that over how may heat cycles, miles, years ?

Just trying to maybe save you some trouble down the road.

Re: Anyone use this before? Loctite 1158514

I hear ya Doug. What I meant initially was that the bolts have never been over-torqued which is the way I was looking at stretching a bolt to where its elasticity is compromised. After checking, this will be the third time around for these fasteners, so should be good to go I would imagine. Again, ARP doesn't really give a number with respect to reusing their head bolts, they just say that as long as the bolts have never been over torqued, then the elasticity of the bolt should not be compromised. Sounds logical anyway...
