One More BB Question Please

I'm using a 396 bare block as a dummy to get several things done and noted these scallops at the rear of the cylinders. I know it's done to unshroud the valves. On my .060 over 454 with 781 heads would it be a good thing to scallop the cylinders like that on the 396 block? Would it make any difference?

Re: One More BB Question Please

No, it is not needed on a 454 due to the larger cylinder bore. Those "scallops" are only found on 396 blocks due to their small bore. They are there for valve clearance.

Re: One More BB Question Please

If you replicate the scallops exactly you would have a blown head gasket on a a 454.

But you are correct grinding a bit in the location of the scallops on a 396 using a used (compressed) head gasket as a scribe line, it would enhance the low lift breathing capability of your big block. I do it as one of my little efforts at improving breathing.

The big block has canted valves that open in toward the center of the cylinder, but at low lift they are shrouded by the head and cylinder wall. Bigger the valve, the bigger the problem.
