SS 396 Fuel Return Line Question

I'm in the process of getting my engine back together. I had purchased an AC fuel filter with a return line that I had on the car Now I am discovering that it was actually for the 350 SS. In the Factory Assembly Manual, for the SS 396, it shows a fuel line that has a fuel junction block that splits off into two lines for a Holley dual feed carb, but there is no mention of the return line. My car has an original return line. If I get the 396 version, it would work with my Holley, but I don't know how to plump in the filter and the return line. Here are both SS set ups, the 350 and the 396:

This one on eBay is for a 396 BBC. It does not show a filter or a return line:

This one is for a 350 (The one I have now):

Can you guys help me clear this up so I can put the correct fuel connections on this car? The first one I bought was actually for a Vette (or it could just be for small blocks), bringing the fuel line up short of the water pump, not actually correct for the 396's. I guess it's not really that big of deal, as I'm not building a 100% correct original.....

Thanks,

Brett......

Re: SS 396 Fuel Return Line Question

The 396 version you show is only for 375 hp engines and 427 COPOís. The lower hp 396ís use the return line with a Q-jet carb if Iím not mistaken. The Holley used in those two engines donít use a return line.

Re: SS 396 Fuel Return Line Question

my 68 396/375 never had a return line, unless one of the first two owners did away with it

Re: SS 396 Fuel Return Line Question

Return lines began in the 69 model year and were used with quadrajet carbs. L35 or L34 396's , L48 350 and the LM1 350 all used quadrajets (with return line). Holley equipped cars (L78,Z28) didn't have a return line.

I'm no expert Brett, but I think the first engine (L34) is correct on the fuel line/filter set-up...1967 - 1969 Camaro engines

Here's what HBC has to offer...1969 Camaro Fuel Line Kit From Fuel Pump To Carburetor 3 Pieces 396-325 HP 396-350 HP OE Material - 1967, 1968, 1969 Camaro Parts - NOS, Rare, Reproduction Camaro Parts for your Restoration

Re: SS 396 Fuel Return Line Question

You needed this page for the 396 w/ return line. Holley or Quadrabog can both use the return line. Only one line goes from the filter to the carb or, in the case of the Holley dual feed, a splitter.
Like was mentioned, only the L34/L35 396 (for big blocks) had the return line.

Great. Thanks Dave. Thanks for the pics! I did find that page you posted. The pics will help out for sure. Would the filter still function properly if I had it in the horizontal position, instead of vertical?

You're welcome. I'm sure it would work, but why? That's an expensive filter to replace. The only reason for leaving it in that location and that style of filter is for originality IMO. Changing it from vertical to horizontal would stick out like a sore thumb.

No, your right. It would be wrong to go that far into making it the way it was and then go change it. You persuaded me to go with it the way it was.
