Re: 302 verifying help needed

Well if the VIN is in the low 500,000 it would be a sept 68 build. The stamp makes no sense and looks like the pad has been pretty scratched up. Unless the 1 and 7 are reversed and the experts would know if there are other examples. Then a 0170 Jan 70th 1969 is a fake stamp.
If reversed an 07 10 DZ stamp would be close to fitting a vin of 700,000 or so 4 week of Sept car maybe a little early. But the pad surface looks messed with and some #s stamped deeper than others.

Re: 302 verifying help needed

Sadly there are to many fake (read misrepresented) cars. The one you are looking at may be...or the variance in depth of the block stamping "may" be because the block has been decked during a rebuild and some of the original stamped #'s were just not set as deep as others (read trying to note a "possible" reason) so with a decked block they are "faint" and hard to read clearly

with that said if there are discrepancies in build date of motor to car or other more visible "alterations" (read #'s don't make any sense) in VIN plate or cowl tag....it may be a....well not a true Z

check build date stamp on the rear end, usually front side of axle housing PS, to see if it is a 3:73 posi and the build date corresponds with the VIN build date

I looked at a supposed 67 RS/SS "# matching" 4 speed car.....the VIN plate was a complete fake

Decoding can be confusing at first and some sellers spew a lot of BS, so it's good you are asking questions.
You call it a Norwood Car, but give a Los Angeles/Van Nuys VIN and describe that there is no X code but give a production code. Sure sounds like a LOS car.
Not sure what you mean by LOS cowl tags being erratic?
Engine codes are stamped at the engine factory, not the car assembly plant.
That stamp pad has been messed with. Need to know the engine casting date to even start to guess what it means.

No X codes on LOS cars.

Do you have a picture of the cowl tag?

Re: 302 verifying help needed

I agree on the picture showing a restamp.

Factory used a die holder that held all of the dies even and allowed a heavy hammer to leave an even imprint with a single stroke. The die imprints show that they are worn and individually stamped.

Most factory dies where still fresh and sharp when they were accidentally broken by careless line workers and replaced. Few ever lasted long enough to actually wear out.

That being said it is on the seller to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that what he is selling is the real deal if he expects a premium price for a used car. If you are willing to pay through the nose for the real thing I would pay a little more for a professional appraisal (needed for insurance purposes anyway) to see if what he has is a real DZ car, otherwise purchase price should reflect body condition and completeness and quality of interior, and assume there is a 230 six cylinder under the hood because you are going to be replacing the engine anyway.

Re: 302 verifying help needed

Engine casting date and engine casting number needed. Both are on the rear bellhousing flange. I don't think that engine is original to the car and Im not too sure about whats going on with that stamping. It doesn't look right.

Casting number is on the drivers side rear bellhousing flange.
Casting date is on the top of the rear bell flange right behind distributor.
