Small diameter HEI Distributor

Hey guys - I just put in a new motor in my Camaro from Blueprint engines. I have an HEI distributor that I purchased from Summit, but it won't clear the firewall. Does anyone know of solutions like a smaller diameter HEI? Has anyone fit a conventional HEI on a '68 and if so, how? Only thing I can think of is to dent the firewall.

Thanks for any/all help.

Re: Small diameter HEI Distributor

If your looking for a stock look, I've been using a DAVES Small Body HEI for close to 10 or so years. He's a member here. DAVE RAY. I like what he does. You can also build your own. Probably what others will tell you, Pertronix or something else.

This link keeps timing out for some reason, not sure why. https://www.davessmallbodyheis.com

Re: Small diameter HEI Distributor

I had a stock GM HEI on my 67 SBC (327). It cleared just fine. If its issues with being able to set the timing by rotating the distributor, and the ""bump" on the distributor cap is hitting the firewall, you can rotate the distributor to the left, and simply use a different "number one" spark plug position. Then follow the correct firing order for the remainder of the spark plug wires to spark plugs.

If this is a SBC engine, it should have clearance, unless the 68 has some sort of different firewall that the 67's did not have.

Never argue with an idiot; they'll only drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

I had one on my 396. It was close, but didn’t hit.

Re: Small diameter HEI Distributor

I had to “ dimple” the firewall to get enough clearance to be able to adjust the timing on my 327

I think Pertronix makes a high output distributor that looks like an original.

Re: Small diameter HEI Distributor

I have a GM HEI on my big block currently. It's a tight fit but it works. I did er, adjust the fire wall on another engine years ago.😳
