what is this hole/gap between block and head?

I pulled my 350 out of the car for some cleanup and upgrades. When I was driving the car, had oil leaking rear driver side at the head/block/china wall intersection. I was able to seal it up. What is supposed to be in this hole? (picture 1)The block was built in 1975 and see the second picture for the drivers side head info. I think it reads 333882. GM2T.

FYI: The passenger head is 333882. GM 1T.

Oil channel and should have a plug in it...or a sending unit.

Is there a plug ? (hope so, otherwise it would be a lot more than a drip)

If there is a plug, it wasn't sealed well <---most likely culprit.

Doug, yes I can see the plug in there. I guess the sealant/gasket must have come off in that area.

No gasket. Pipe dope (same as used by plumbers before plastic took over the world). It is a pipe thread in the block that is sealed by a pipe plug. must have sealant to prevent oil from wicking (slow leak) up between the threads.

Thinking he meant gasket maker (AKA: RTV) ?

But yes, pipe dope. (doesn't have to be GM brand )
Can be bought at your local parts store, big box store (home depot/lowes/ETC)
