327 oil drain plug ?

My drain plug, 3/4" head, is slit on the threaded shaft both directions and appears to be slightly tapered. It threads in lose but tightens as it gets to flush with pan.

Is this a "oversize" plug or were the originals like this?

All replacement plugs I see are just 1/2-20 solid shaft/thread plugs with single or double oversize ones also available for worn thread pans

You may have a replacement drain plug that cut it's own NPT tapered threads in a striped out or cross treaded oil pan. We used to sell them as TBA in the gas stations that I worked on back in the early sixties.

Re: 327 oil drain plug ?

would a stock pan use a 1/2x20 or were they NPT or a specific tapered thread?

1/2-20, not pipe, had a dog pecker tip, but not otherwise tapered.
