Breathers

Gentlemen,

I have the car listed below with a 396 big block. My concern is with breathers. Originally when I bought the car it had a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) on the right side of the engine going to the carburetor and a breather on the left. The engine seemed to be pushing a great amount of blowby out of the breather on the left side. So, I went out and bought two breathers and installed them both doing away with the PCV valve. But now itís like puff the magic dragon, I mean there is a lot of blowby coming out both breathers. Is this normal or do I have problems?

Thank you in advance for your comments.

Re: Breathers

You should be running a PCV system and yes it sounds like you have problems. As bad as
your description sounds I would do a compression check to start.

Re: Breathers

That much blow-by seems a bit excessive.
Time for a compression check and or leak down test.

Re: Breathers

Excessive blow by.

Definitely time to think about a re-build.

Re: Breathers

Yes, too much blow-by - leak test would show how well, or bad, the rings are sealing.
Also, an aggressive camshaft will produce less vacuum from the manifold.
The proper set-up is shown below.
