Please Help ID Steering Gearbox

I bought a used power steering gearbox/pump assembly with hoses attached out of a Nova and supposedly useable on my 68 Camaro.

I just got all the grime off and found these numbers on the steering box:

Body = 5691676
26 249

Aluminum Cover = 5686555
254 8 (stamped in raised box on same cover)

Can I be sure this will work in my car which is manual now?

Where are the numbers on the pump assembly?

As always, thanks for any replies.

Re: Please Help ID Steering Gearbox

Joe, if it came from a Nova, it'll work. Those look like the Saginaw numbers that are very common on GM cars of the era. They're the same numbers on my '69 power steering box. In reality, those numbers tell you nothing about the box really.... such as steering ratio, etc. They're just casting numbers for the body. On the aluminum cover (should have a big S on it) there was a painted code or small sticker that told what ratio the box is. It's probably gone now.
Do a search on those numbers and you'll find lots of threads.

Re: Please Help ID Steering Gearbox

From what I found when I looked for and changed mine was that the gear box number was of no importance to the ID, but the stamped number on the raised tag just below the adjusting screw 254 8, indicates the build date of the gear box; If numbers are important.

The 254 being the numbers of days in the year, about Aug 15th. and the 8 after that number indicate the year built. (Aug 15th 1968)

I too think it should fix your Nova as well.
