92 camaro rs 305 w/manual trans help

I just bought this car from a co-worker. The car drove fine to my house, a little warm though. I replaced the coolant temp switch so the fan runs when it's supposed to. I cleaned the car up, put gas in it, (it was close to empty. Burnt fuel pump?) now it won't run at all. I replaced the plugs, fuel filter, throttle position switch. Checked the cap and rotor, seem fine. The motor turns over fine and it starts occasionaly, but barely idles and when it does "idle," you can't give it any throttle at all, or it will die. The previous owner has told me that the fuel pump was replaced within the last 6 months to a year. The battery and alternater are also new. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You really need to do some testing before you throw away a lot more money on parts that are not needed. First thing, go buy a service manual of some type, you will need it to properly troubleshoot. By the sounds of it it is a fuel problem ... first thing to check would be fuel pressure. The book sould tell you where to check it and what it should be. If fuel is ok, you probably need to put it on a scope to check ignition. A compression test would be a good idea also. An engine needs fuel, compression and spark at the correct time in order to run. One of these is missing. When you find out which one it is, you will have found the problem.

Re: 92 camaro rs 305 w/manual trans help

Can you here the fuel pump energize its self? Even if it does, it may be bad. Get a fuel pressure gauge and do some troubleshooting. fuel injected motors like their fuel pressure to be right on the money or it wont run very well. Like Bill said, do some troubleshooting with a manual before you do maintenance by replacement. While it is a favorite technique of mine sometimes, it is expensive and frustrating!
