Engine Stumbles

Took the car out for a drive for the first time since the engine rebuild and everything was going great. Engine starts at the touch of the key, throttle response is good and will push you back in the seat. After a few runs of mild acceleration I decided to try WOT to see if the trans kick down was working. Car started off and at about 2500 rpm fell on its face. From then on it was hard to start and won't stay cranked. I'm running a Q-Jet carb and a HEI ignition.Advance is set at 14*. Any suggestion as to what is the problem?

Re: Engine Stumbles

what have you checked looking for the problem?
Bout the only thing I can think of is the throttle arm hung in the plug wires, and either pulled a bunch loose or turned the distributor if it wasn't tight.

Checked the timing and double checked the A/F mixture setting with the vacuum gage. Took it out for another drive with the same results. Engine runs good until the top end of second gear then she lays down. When I back off the throttle it runs good again.

Re: Engine Stumbles

Lays down completely, not just a giant bog when the secondary's open?
she will pull clean all the way up in first?
ok, she's running out of fuel then. Q-jets have real small fuel bowls. If the pump is weak, any of the fuel lines are kinked, the needle valve in the carb is (rubber) old and swelled up, clogged filter, even a pinhole in the rubber fuel line back at the tank can let it run out of gas.

Re: Engine Stumbles

Very well could be the fuel filter. The car has been sitting in the body shop with a 1/4 tank of gas and condensation could be causing a problem with the filter I'll change it tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks.

Re: Engine Stumbles

Replaced the fuel filter and did not see anything in the old filter. Reset the timing to 8* advanced and opened up the the fuel mixture screws 1/4 turn. Took it out for a spin and no stumble.
