Alternator bracket won't bolt down (68 350)

My alternator bracket is too short to attach the top bolt to the thermostat housing. I'm headed to Carlise this week and can try to find something that fits better but need to know what that might be.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to what type of bracket I should try?

Specs: Crate 350, Alternator on the passenger's side, no A/C.

You may have to add a shim to the other mount. It might take some juggling, but it looks correct.

I tried to reposition the bracket but it put the alternator out of line with the belts and pulleys.

Here is a better pic of the setup--any recommendations are much appreaciated!

Re: Alternator bracket won't bolt down (68 350)

go get an upper alt bracket off a late 70's car or truck and bolt it to that threaded hole on the intake just in front of the water outlet. i'm not sure of the year breaks, but you might need to get a water pump for the same year because they actually changed the top boss that the alternator bracket bolts to for some reason or another.

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

wanna hear about 20 years ago when i was too smart to know any better?

im having the same problem
i tried using washers as shims but it just threw the alternator off alignment
the best bet is to go to JEG'S and takea look at thier alternator brackets
like some of thier one arm upper brackets
they look like they will solve our problem

You have a 69 alternator set up, pass side, on your 68, OE being drvr side. Also, you have an aftermarket intake, they never line up with OE brackets, or at least they don't for me.

You can get a thick Gr 5 washer, place it upon the points to be connected, scribe a line on the bracket. Remove bracket & remove paint about the scribe line and weld the washer into place. Then, grind the weld semi-smooth, prime and paint and reinstall.

Try to do something with the third attachment point, having only two attachment points will fatigued the bracket and it will break at the water pump.

Unbolt the bottom mounting bolt. Remove belt from alternator. Install top (t'stat housing) bolt. Now you will be able to see if shims are needed on lower mount. It will work! Send me a "private message" with your e-mail address, and I can send you pictures of my set-up. NOTE: I do have approx. a .250 shim on the bottom mount.

Get you hack or chop saw out and chop that part of the braket off! Easy fix! Not a show car thing, but it works!

Or just get the right brackets for your car.

for one thing, take the belts off, hook the bracket up, then put the belt on the alternater, and move it aorund.

looks like you tightened everything up, and nw it wolnt fit.

Re: Alternator bracket won't bolt down (68 350)

I like Derrik's idea. Late 70's early 80's 350 brackets will put that mounting point down on the intake and not at the thermostat housing. Exact same bracket.... just shorter at that mount point.
If you need one, I have one.

Re: Alternator bracket won't bolt down (68 350)

I agree with Everett. Looks like you may have a mixture of 68 short water pump with a 69 bracket setup (long water pump). What is the distance from the machined mounting surface of the water pump hub to the water outlet surfaces? That will tell us a lot about your setup.

I take back what I said. I totally forgot the water pumps were different.
