Oil pressure and type questions

I just built a 383 small block. It has 9.7-1, comp XE274, HV55 oil pump and all the clearances have been checked and are well within specs. When I start the engine cold I have about 45 psi at idle which is around 850rpm in park. Once the vehicle around 190 degrees it has about 22 psi at idle. Is this ok? I am using Pennzoil 10W30 right now but planning to switch to a synthetic. Only have about 65 miles on the engine since break in. WHen would be safe to switch and what viscosity would you guys recommend? THanks

Re: Oil pressure and type questions

Your oil pressure levels are fine. My crate 350 runs at 45-50 cold, and 18-20 in the summer at idle and in gear . Once I accelerate, it jumps up to 40 PSI, and stays there until the next traffic light. Super high oil pressure is really not needed. Some engine builders say that the rule of thumb is that you need 10 PSI per 1000 rpm's. Taching 6 grand, you should have about 60 pounds of oil pressure. My blown 540 rat used to show 75-80 cold, and 30-35 warmed up and in gear using a high volume Melling pump, and Royal Purple 10W 40 synthetic. Your levels are fine though, and really nothing to be concerned with IMO. I thought that mine was low as well until I did some checking around.Chevy specifies an operating (not at idle) oil pressure for my crate engine at 40 PSI, which is almost dead on what it actually produces. If the general says 40 PSI is normal, I believe it. I've driven the car with no problems over lots of miles.

Re: Oil pressure and type questions

I've had several small block engines in the past that had almost identical oil pressures that your engine has using 10w40 Pennzoil. I never had any trouble out of those mouse motors and I ran those engines very hard. From my experiance, you'll be just fine. As far as the switch to synthetic, I've always heard you need to wait untill 2500 miles to switch. But, isn't there some new cars coming from the factory with synthetic oil in them? Hmmmmm

Re: Oil pressure and type questions

How tight is this fresh motor? For example, where the factory might set the main clearances to 0.0025", a performance motor might have those clearances at 0.0015". A well built performance motor might benefit from some 5W30 up there in Canada. Especially now that the cold weather is setting in.
