Question '68 Plain valve covers.... Which way is right side up??

I have recently purchased a set of correct valve covers for my 302. I have noticed that they are not symmetrical, one side of the valve cover has much deeper hold down bolt reliefs than the other.

My question is this; does the larger set of reliefs go towards the bottom (exhaust manfolds) or towards the top (intake manifold)???

Thanks in advance for any helpful insight

If you hold them up and look at the end, you'll note that one wall is vertical relative to the sealing surface and the other wall is at an angle; the vertical side with the long reliefs goes toward the intake manifold. If you put them on backwards, the pushrod end of the rockers will probably hit the inside of the angled wall of the covers.

Re: '68 Plain valve covers.... Which way is right side up??

My plain steel valve covers for my 68 have the letter O stamped on one side, which I'm told indicates the intake side. I just looked at them and going by what John said the letter O would be on the intake side, the more vertical side. RonM

Thanks for the additional input Ron. My covers are chrome and the "O" is faint (on one cover it looks like a "C") but they are there.

Thanks!!
