781 Heads

I'm going tomorrow afternoon to look at a set of 781 heads. From what I know as of now is that they have recently been rebuilt(they have 8 hours on them), they were on a boat that is equipped with a 454, and that he wants 500$. The reason he's selling them is because he bought a set of aluminum heads. My question is this. Is it worth it? If I can get resonable proof(i.e. build sheets, receipts, verbal confirmation from machine shop) will it be worth the money. Anything I should look for, problems, or questions I should ask him? Thanks in advance.

Re: 781 Heads

"they were on a boat " .... forget about them and keep on looking unless by some miracle the engine is one of the very few that use a closed cooling system with antifreeze in it. If it is your typical "raw water" cooled marine engine, the heads will be corroded pretty badly and I never recommend using them on a car.
Just my opinion,

Re: 781 Heads

I second that stay away from any engines that were used in a boat.

Re: 781 Heads

Well I bought the heads. When I got to his house I realized that he was not just a shade tree mechanic. He'd been in business for 17 years and had done alot of engine builds for some of the "big shots" around here. The heads were run in a boat for 8 hours in fresh water(not salt water) when they were replaced for Dart Pro Alum. heads. They also have a year full warranty with unlmited mileage. The guy seemed very honest and will be doing business with him again. I'm going to talk to the machine shop that does his work for him to get a full build sheet of the heads to know exactly what I'm dealing with. Thanks for all the help.
