Which intake gasket should I use?

With the intent of fixing a vacuum leak I pulled the intake off of my 69 DZ 302 engine. Based on recommendations in camaros.net I had already bought a set of Felpro 1205 intake gaskets. These new gaskets did not match the gaskets that were previously used so I am turning to this news group to educate me. The 302 heads each have three coolant ports - front, back, and center. The 302 aluminum intake manifold only has two coolant ports which match the head - front and center. The old intake gaskets are cut for all three coolant ports while the Felpro 1205 gaskets are cut for only the front and back coolant ports. The 1205 gaskets are "blocked heat passage".
My questions are:

1) How does coolant flow through the intake manifold? Obviously the front passages provide a path between the heads and the radiator. What is the purpose of the center passage other than heating the choke spring?

2) What intake gasket should I use on a stock 69 DZ302? Is the Felpro 1205 the one to use, thereby blocking the center coolant ports?
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Which intake gasket should I use?

The center holes are not coolant ports. Exhaust actually flows into those ports. I block those anyway, less chance of boiling the fuel. 1205 is probably a little large for an un ported 186 head. I don't know the # off hand, but the stock port gaskets that come with most of the Felpro kits work just fine. You may have to use the little metal block off plates that come in some of the kits if you want to block those ports? I am sure you could run the 1205, but it may burn through the gasket after a while. The water flows throught eh front 2 holes in the intake. Some people using after market single plane intakes tap the rear holes on the intake where the head ports are and run hose from rear to the front for better cooling and water flow. But obviosly thousands of cars run just fine without that.

Re: Which intake gasket should I use?

Thanks dragsterman. Now I think I understand. Coolant only flows through the front ports of the intake manifold. You jogged my memory about the center ports not being for coolant. When I took off the old gaskets yesterday I had noticed the center ports looked different from the front by being blackened. I'd had forgotten that when I posted last night. Anyways I think I will get another set of gaskets which have the center hole. The choke spring appears to be working correctly as thge manifold heats up and I don't want to mess with that.
Thanks,
Mark

PS: I'm going to try to exhange the 1205 gaskets for something else. However, since I have already opened the package and if I can't exchange then I am willing to send the 1205s to whoever will pay for the cost of shipping.

You may want to try Felpro 1204 if 1205's are too big.
