rear main seal

I have the trans pulled on my '89 RS/305. While it's out being overhauled I want to replace the 1-piece rear main seal. Can I just pry the seal out of the seal housing, or does the housing have to be removed too? I've heard conflicting info on this. If it can be removed as is, is there a special tool required, or will a screwdriver do? There are 3 slots in the housing around the seal, I'm hoping they're to pry the seal out.

Re: rear main seal

Those seals just pop out with a scew driver put some grease in the lip and drive the new seal in as that maybe tricky keeping it staight.

Re: rear main seal

You may want to use a little bit of silicone, or some other type of sealer on the outside (metal body) of that seal before you drive it in. And as mentioned above, make sure you lubricate the lip of the seal where it contacts the crank to keep from burning it up (dry seal) on the next start up.

He, He!!

The old rope seals that you had to pull through using a "chinese handcuff" were fun!!
