fuel tank or gauge problem?

I have something strange when filling up lately. When I fill it up when it hits 3/4 full on the gauge it takes around 7.5 gallons each time. I thought the tank is 18 gallon capacity. If so, wouldn't that mean around 4.5 gallons per 1/4 on the fuel gauge. Wondering if the tank needs replacing or is the new autometer fuel gauge not accurate?

Re: fuel tank or gauge problem?

how old is the fuel sender?

after a long period of time the sender can go bad and give incorrect readings

Re: fuel tank or gauge problem?

Put a multitestor on the gauge. At 0 Ohms it should read empty, at 90 Ohms it should read full.

Re: fuel tank or gauge problem?

Thanks I'll check it out when I get to half & see if the ohms are around 45-50. I suppose at 3/4 it shoud read around 65 ohms? It sdoes seem if it takes 7 gallons when i use 1/4 a tank of gas then I would run out before the gauge hits E.
