Question Convert stock distributor to HEI

Before I try to breath some life into my 68's stock 327 2bbl, I'de like to convert it over to electronic ignition, but keep the stock appearance.

I notice the little access door on the front of the dist cap is missing, so I figure now is as good of a time as any to do it.
I do have an accell distributor that is the smaller diameter (so I don't have to modify the firewall), but not sure what to do for the coil. I don't want to use the Accell super coil I have from a previous engine.

I'de appreciate any ideas as I'm not as familiar with ignition setups as I'de like to be.

Re: Convert stock distributor to HEI

I always did like the stock location on the manifold with a stock demension aftermarket type coil painted to apear stock. Pertronix makes a decent conversion for your stock dist. They have coils to match with it also. I have had decent results with them.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: Convert stock distributor to HEI

I converted my points distributor to a HEI using a duraspark pickup and the HEI module mounted on the outside, much like Dave Ray does with his. Has been working extremely well and very reliable so far.

By the way, you don't always need to modify the firewall to get a HEI to fit. I didn't.

Re: Convert stock distributor to HEI

I kept my stock distributor and changed to pointless ignition and changed the stock distributor to a 40,000 volt unit. This maintains a stock appearance and improved performance significantly over stock distributor. If you're interested, I can give you more details. Send me a note.
