I think you can use the same tranny but if you put in a high performance 350, 383, or 400 SBC, it won't last long. If you really want a 5 speed to hold up behind a strong V8, you might want to take a look at the Tremec TKO for starters but they are not exactly cheap either so it really depends on what V8 you plan to install, how you plan to use the car, and what your budget is to beef it up.

Fix that sticky capslock key, I can't even make it all the way through your question. It hurts my eyes. I did however read the topic and 1FASTZ's response and second his opinion. Questions need to be answered first.

Thumbs up Re: V6-v8 Conversion Am I Able To Still Use Old 5 Speed Transmision

Fwiw, caps locked is called shouting.

And I third the light duty tranny behind a healthy 350 motor UNLESS you want to drop in a stock 220hp, 4-barrel 283 "powerpack" motor. Then, it should be fine, imho...

AND I am here ta say that a stock 283 pp motor runs darn good for JUST 283 inches!!!

In answer to your question, the 2.8L T-5 transmission and the V8 (305) T-5 transmissions are different animals because of input shaft length. That said, one can either swap the input shaft (HUGE pita, you don't want to do this if you have no tranny experience) or find another T5 (V8 version); chances are it'll be broken because has been mentioned before they break really easily (if you want to keep it manual and low buck I suppose you could swap in a Saginaw 4-speed (or even 3 speed) but the easiest swap would probably be a TH350 and a different length driveshaft...

From a drivability standpoint a 700r4 would also be a good choice (better gas milage) but more complicated.

Me? I'd probably find a rwd 3.1L (same engine family) and make it run a bit better while minimizing problems...then sell it for a V8 car...

Like I said, a 305HO 5-speed behind a now solid cammed Powerpack 220hp/283 motor and go have more fun then the Law will allow!!

Install an old stock, -097 Duntov or a modern CC 270 solid or Isky Z-20 AND run her high AND hard!!

I don't know about the Isky Z-20, but the little Duntov will go above 7,000 rpm EASY!! With no more then a cheap, $25 to $35/set of Z-, (-142), valve springs!!

Yeah but he's got SMOG in CA...In an '88 that'd be a nightmare to pass.
