Question hot ignition wire

hey people, just installed a mallory unilite distributor, with a msd coil into my 396, car is running great except the positive resistance wire is getting so hot you can't touch it. there is also a wisp of smoke noticeable. I put my original 30yr old delco remy coil back on and the wire is normal again. this has me baffled, and am wondering if I should use a ballast resistor to take some of the heat away from the msd coil. any suggestions or if anyone has come across same problem let me know how to cure problem. thanks

Re: hot ignition wire

I think a read thru the directions on the mallory is in order. I've never had one or read them, but I'm pretty sure they need the resister to remain in place. I'm wondering what they recommend for a coil tho? The MSD, like many hi-po coils, is half the resistance of a standard coil, therefore it will draw twice as much current. That's what heating the resister wire.

Re: hot ignition wire

Yes you have to run a resistor inline with a unilite,be careful not to burn up that module
