80 Camaro 454 Swap Questions

Hey folks, I'm new to the forum here, but not new to Chevy scene. I have a 1980 Camaro that currently has a 350/T56 setup in it, but I would like to swap it over to a BBC 454/TH350 or TH400. The car has manual brakes and power steering, although I would like to convert it to power brakes. My question is, when swapping over to a big block, what frame mounts and engine mounts do I use? Will the stock 350 stuff work, or will I need BB specific stuff? If so, where can I find it? I'm thinking the mounts from an early second gen BB Camaro should fit, but can't find them. I've been doing a lot of research on the web, but can't seem to find the answers I'm looking for. Thanks in advance!

Re: 80 Camaro 454 Swap Questions

This swap is simple. I had an 80' Z/28 that I put a BBC/4-speed in years ago. Just use the original 350 mounts in your car. My car had PB and A/C on it and I used the tall MOROSO valves covers with no problems. I had to fab a PS pump but that was no biggie either. The problem is ZERO hood clearence with the factory hood. E-mail me if you have other questions, Maybe I can help.

Re: 80 Camaro 454 Swap Questions

except for the headers and front engine accessories, the big block will bolt right into the small block mounts. even the heater hoses, fuel lines, wiring, and radiator hoses will hook right up.
you should keep the T56- a big block and a stick rules, and with the 50% overdrive, you will get economy car-like mileage when idling down the interstate. you will, however, need a 454 specific T56 flywheel, but i think Centerforce makes that.

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

wanna hear about 20 years ago when i was too smart to know any better?

Re: 80 Camaro 454 Swap Questions

Well, the reason why I was going to take out the T56 and swap in a TH400 is because I heard the T56 can't handle a whole lot of abuse. When I bought the Camaro, it was already installed, but I'd like to put it in my 67 Camaro. What do you guys think??

Re: 80 Camaro 454 Swap Questions

I think the T56 will be toast in a week behind a 454 if you do anything to the 454 at all. I would go the T400 route with a converter. A POSI is a must have with this set up. It should be a blast to drive!

Re: 80 Camaro 454 Swap Questions

That's what I was thinking too. The T56 might run great under normal driving, but I plan on abusing the 454 a bit. Standard Gear sells a kit to beef up the T56, but it's a bit pricey and involved. I'll probably stick with either a TH400 or a beefy 700R4. I was reading this months issue of Camaro Magazine, and there's an article about an underdrive/overdrive unit. They installed it on a 4th gen w/ 4L60E, and they can somehow get 8 different gear ratios. You guys should check it out... Thanks for all the advice guys!!
