timing question

say you get an engine that did not come with a distributor,
when you install a new one, do you put the #1 cylinder at tdc
and install the distributor with the rotor facing the #1 plug wire to start the timing process?
thanks

Re: timing question

You need to make sure you are on the compression stroke and set at TDC when installing the distributor. Remember that it takes 2 rotations of the crankshaft to complete the 4 strokes. Every other time the piston is at TDC you are on the exhaust stroke.

Re: timing question

The oil pump shaft also causes some problems, it is very easy to miss by one tooth while trying to engage the oil pump shaft.

Re: timing question

pull the engine over with a ratchet on the balancer bolt, and your finger in the #1 spank plug hole. You'll feel the compresion as the piston comes up to tdc. Stop turning when the mark on the balancer is 8-12 degrees before TDC on the pointer. Mark the distibutor housing at the tower for #1 cylinder, take the cap off and drop it in. you'll "feel" the gears engaging as you turn the rotor. Turn it so it is 1 tooth counterclockwise from your mark (toward the carb) the oil pump drive will hang the distributor a quarter inch too high, with the rotor still CCW from your mark. bump the starter and it will fall in the rest of the way. Tighten it down and be good to go.
