Which water pump? Does it really matter?

Guys,

I am just curious, my engine setup was home built, so I'm not sure what is correct or better.

I have a 67 with a long water pump. My alternator is also on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

I am considering a serpentine setup in the future & my engine isn't original.

Other than originality, does it matter which water pump you use? or which side of the engine the alternator is on? Does one setup outperform another etc...

Thanks!
Nick

No one system outperforms the other. Its just by design.

If the alternator is on the drvr side, usually, a short water pump with the correct set of pulleys work fine.

If the alternator is on the pass side, a long water pump and its corresponding pulleys work well also.

The serpentine set-up from a 3rd Gen Camaro works very well. These are in abundance, along with Monte Carlo's, are good donors. Get all the brackets and save all the hardware, because they mix them. The engine accessory holes are SAE, the alt and bracket nuts are Metric.

What is actually correct for a 67, short or long pump?
I'm pretty sure that the alternator is on the driver's side for 67.

Short pump, driver's side alt is correct for 67.

And for 68. Sixty-nine and later have gone to pass side.

Re: Which water pump? Does it really matter?

If you have, or are thinking about adding A/C, and you're changing all this stuff anyway to go serpentine, AND you going new and not junkyard (note on the junkyard stuff: most if not all will have A/c), you might think about putting the alternator back on the drivers side. The aftermakret A/C guys seem to get real confused with a 67-68 pass side/long pump setup, and IMO it looks simply hideous to have those giant black A/C hoses draping across your engine.

Re: Which water pump? Does it really matter?

I don't have AC now, but would like to add it some time in the future.
I was really considering the March setup. It's a little pricey (I think about $500) bucks for all the pullys etc... but they look incredible.

I guess I should move the Alternator to the driver side & get a short pump.

The passenger side will look so naked once the alternator is on the drivers side, since the power steering pump is already on that side!
But, I guess if I ever get the AC, it will balance out

Thanks for your advice,

Nick

Re: Which water pump? Does it really matter?

If you put the alternator back where it belongs, you'll have to deal with brackets. Think it's a safe assumption that your heads have accessory bolts? Many of us are using a late 70's / early 80's vette bracket that bolts to the front of the head. Beats the heck out of the flimsy bent steel things the header company's give you (the alternator originally bolted to cast in "ears" on the ironm mainfolds) The vette bracket can be had in iron or alluminum, I got the alluminum one and polished it, looks great. It's still available from GM parts direct for under a hundred, someone will chime in with the part number.
