Unhappy Brackets

I am trying to figure out which alternator and power steering pump brackets to use on my 68. I have a 302 but not a Z-28. I'm thinking I just want the standard brackets but I'm not sure which ones. I see ones that mount the alternator on either side of the motor. I am kinda confused? Any advice?

Re: Brackets

The stock brackets work just fine - 68's had the short water pump and the alternator on the driver's side of the engine.

Re: Brackets

The 68 and earlier GM heads didn't have the accessory monting holes on the fronts of the heads. If you don't have those mounting holes on your heads, you kinda hafta go with what John said. If you do have the holes, you can go either way. If you choose pass side alt, you need a long water pump.

Re: Brackets

ahh yes John, but stock for what?
If you have iron manifolds, the stock alternator bracket works well, with headers that's a different story. The header people give you this cheesy bracket that barely works and breaks often. A better alternative if you have heads with tapped holes on the front is what carlc used here http://casanova.speedtech-performanc...ator%20mod.htm I used these, too, they work great.
For the power steering, there's 2 kinds of small block brackets, one set for engines with 8" balancers and another for engines with 6" and change balancers. The ones for a 6" balancer won't fit with an 8", and there may be belt alignment issues too as I think the 6 inch balancer is thinner than the 8".

edit... oh yes, don't forget, drivers side alternator goes with short water pump, pass side goes with long.

Re: Brackets

Quick question. The alternator bracket that carlc used, it that alternator bracket universal? Useable on either side of the motor? I believe that I have the 302 balancer, which pulleys do I use? The 302 pulleys?

Re: Brackets

The alternator bracket carl used is listed for a .... like 74-80 or so small block vette. It will mount the alternator to the drivers side head for use with a short water pump. The head must be 69 or later, these have the 3 tapped holes in the front. As I think more about it, I don't believe pulley alignment will be an issue. I use this bracket with a stock 6" 327 balancer and pulleys and everything lines up perfect. If there's an issue, you could space the bracket away from the head with washers.
Here's a link to my alternator bracket saga last year, lots of info in there. https://www.camaros.net/forums/showth...rnator+bracket
