Reversion pulse; smoke test to check vac leak

I think I need some hi-tech help for my DZ. I taked to a shop and the owner gave me some ideas.

1. Reversion pulse causing lean condition. I know that a long overlap cam like the 30-30 can cause a reversion pulse. Because I am not breaking any new ground with basically stock build, if the cam was installed adv. or ret. could that cause a reversion pulse? How about headers with chambered exhaust?

2. A smoke test to verify no vacuum leaks. Is there equipment available or is it all home made? How is it done?

3. I have a post below asking about my 4053 carb. I notice that the idle air bleeds (outside holes) do not have a brass restrictor like my old 3310 does. If the hole is too big does that cause a lean or condition?

4. I do not experience any lack of bottom end power, in my opinion. Is it possible the cam timing is off?

I am sorry to become a pain and sound like a broken record, but the basic stuff I think has been covered. It just won't idle without the transition slots open (1100 rpm). I bought a new set of feeler gages that is wide because my old set is narrow. I checked the lash because these Comp roller tips are a little hard to adjust with the narrow blade.
