Can't keep the belts on my 396

It seems everytime I rev the engine above 5500 the alternator belt comes off. This has happened 3 times over the past two months. I have replaced the belt but still no luck in keeping it on. Yesterday my son took it out and this time both P/S belt and alt belt came off. I have checked the alignment and all looks well. The belts and pulley are standard v belt design. I am looking at going to the serpentine in hopes this annoyance will end. Any thoughts? I am looking at March right now but will take recommendations. I have a 396 with long water pump and a key way P/S pump no A/C.

Re: Can't keep the belts on my 396

I had the same problem with my 396 Chevelle with PS and AC. You have got to really look at the alignment. Even though it may look good, really look hard at it and adjust as necessary. The slightest little bit out of alignment will throw them off. I also had to keep them super tight, don't know if that is the right solution, but it worked for me. Once I got the aligment and tightness straight, I could rev the day lights out of it with no issues.

Re: Can't keep the belts on my 396

these are the numbers that worked for my car...power steering AND alternator both on driver side..NO AC.

Advance Auto Parts
alternator number is 17580 Gold Label Top Cog 17/32" x 58" belt
Power steering is 37513 Drive Rite 29/64" x 37-.50" vbelt

as far as the deep groove goes...dont know, but i am sure summit or jegs has the hookup.

Re: Can't keep the belts on my 396

I had the same problem with a 61 Vette. I was throwing fan belts and eating water pump bearings. One day I was revving the engine with the hood open and noticed the fan was wobbling. The fan clutch was bad. It would only wobble at high speed. I replaced the fan clutch and never threw another belt.

I drove it for the first time in 1972 when I was 15.

Better looking than a '56 Ford or Plymouth.

Re: Can't keep the belts on my 396

Thanks for the feedback. I may get some of those belts before I try the conversion. My alt and p/s are on opposite sides.

Hope you guys all had a great Christmas. My wife just gave me $300 to buy a gift for the Camaro as well as a prime rib dinner. Sweet!

Re: Can't keep the belts on my 396

My 350 used to through the belt at 5500 evertime, until I bought a Moroso 5in, deep groove alternator pully. Slows everything down.
